FIRE AND INJURY PREVENTION THROUGH EDUCATION

HEARING IMPAIRED SMOKE DETECTOR PROGRAM
As Chief of Canandaigua Fire Rescue, I became aware of a problem with hearing impaired children at the Canandaigua School System not having detectors that were designed for the hearing impaired. I obtained information from the school staff member that interacts with the hearing impaired children. She felt there was a need for some families to have hearing impaired smoke detectors provided (some have the ability to purchase their own). As I am also a member of the Canandaigua Safety Council which encompasses all of Ontario County, I brought the subject to them. During the process, my sister and I jointly purchased a smoke detector that has an extra loud sound and a strobe light for our father who is extremely deaf when he has his hearing aids out. I demonstrated the detector at a Safety Council meeting and the council pledged $1,000 towards the purchase of detectors (they are about $165 each including shipping, are 120 V with a battery back-up). Some of the Safety Council members are Rotarians and due to their passing this on, the Rotary club pledged to purchase 4 more detectors. We have designed a process to identify individuals and families that are hearing impaired and the school Hearing Impaired teacher along with a Safety Council committee screens applicants for financial need. Members of the local fire service in the area where the detectors are to be placed are called upon to install the detectors. The donation of detectors are not limited to the Canandaigua School System nor are they limited only to children. We are in the process of asking other service organizations to sponsor detectors. We expect to cover as many people as we can identify and expect the demand will get greater once we do a blurb in the local newspaper.
Robert Case, Fire Chief, Canandaigua Fire Rescue and Charter member of NY-SAFE (former Treasurer). ------------------------------------------------------------ NY-SAFE NEWS From President Boel October 1, 2007 NY-SAFE is on the move, our 2007 Annual Meeting held the weekend of May 4-6 was a huge success with nearly 40 members in attendance. The election of officers for 2007-2008 yielded a super group of dedicated public safety professionals to move NY-SAFE in the right direction. This being our 20th Anniversary, since our inception in 1987 when NY-SAFE was organized, many things have changed in the Public Safety Field but one thing has stayed consistent, Education Saves Lives. Since our Annual meeting many things have taken place, we have finally been issued our not-for-profit status and tax ID by NYS, we have officially been recognized by the federal government as an association and have put many new member services in place. Our Web site is filled with direction and information, our newsletter is being published on schedule and professionally, we have taken a strong roll in sharing the information on our signature EDITH NIGHT Program and we are aggressively seeking alternative funding through grants and members items from our elected public officials to provide more to our membership for being a member. Thanks to the NY-SAFE members over the last 20 years your dedication to public safety has saved many lives. A special thanks to the NY-SAFE members that choose to take on the task of being an officer of the association to help develop a resource for public safety professionals to use in the quest to make our communities safer. Your hard work and consistency has moved NY-SAFE to where it is today and paved our future, for those that have been a driving force since our beginning THANK YOU !. We just completed a great weekend in AmherstNY in the Western District September 28th and 29th at our fall board/committee meeting and mini seminar. All officers in attendance worked very hard covering the issuing being faced by the association and took part in a great mini seminar program one put on by The National Safe Home Foundation and another by J-Fire. In all it was great to institute this mini seminar format in conjunction with our fall board/committee meeting for all members and guests in the western region. Director Bob Reed did a super job organizing the weekend program and arranging the mini seminar. We look forward to our next board/committee and mini seminar program scheduled for the 3rd weekend in February 2008 in the southeastern/southern districts with Dirtector DiMonda and Treasurer Jahelka being our hosts. This will be a great opportunity for the members and prospective members in that region to take part in the business of the association and take advantage of one of our mini seminar program provided free of charge. Our next edition of our newsletter is being prepared and will be mailed early November filled with info and tips on making New York Safe !!!! Our Regional Directors have been hard at work reaching out and contacting the members in there respective regions to develop a point of contact line. If members have not been in contact with their regional director please go to the officers page on this web site, there is a list of the regions, counties in the regions and the director for that region. As always be safe and watch and share the tips and tools that you use and have to help make and keep NY-SAFE !!!!!!!!!!!!!! --------------------------------------------------------------
NY-SAFE NEWSLETTER One of the main methods of getting information to ALL NY-SAFE Members is through our newsletter. This publication comes out 3 times annually and is packed with information from and too our members. All members are encouraged to submit articles for print in the newsletter. Newsletter articles can be sent to any officer or director and are then forwarded to Past President Eileen Magin who organizes the publication then sends it to our very generous benefactor Ross Industries who then prints it and mails it at no charge. In addition to mailing the newsletter to all members, once a year Ross Industries mails either one of our newsletter editions or a separate promotional/ informational publication of NY-SAFE to each of the 1,800 fire agencies in New YorkState. The information that we share across the state can greatly help each of us in our goal of making New York Safe with NY-SAFE.
