Spring / Summer Safety Tips
Grilling
Propane and charcoal BBQ grills must only be used outdoors. If used indoors, or in any enclosed spaces, such as tents, they pose both a fire hazard and the risk of exposing occupants to toxic gases and potential asphyxiation.
Purchase the proper starter fluid and store the can out of reach of children, and away from heat sources. Keep children and pets away from the grill area: declare a three-foot "safe zone" around the grill. Periodically remove grease or fat buildup in trays below grill so it cannot be ignited by a hot grill.
Never, ever use a grill on a wood or combustible deck or floor surface.
Keep a minimum of 10 distance from a grill in use to a structure or combustible item, such as a picnic table, lawn chairs or towels. Charcoal grills Purchase the proper starter fluid and store the can out of reach of children, and away from heat sources.
Never add charcoal starter fluid when coals or kindling have already been ignited, and never use any flammable or combustible liquid other than charcoal starter fluid to get the fire going. Propane grills
If you smell gas while cooking, immediately get away from the grill and call the fire department. Do not attempt to move the grill.
Never store propane gas cylinders in buildings or garages. If you store a gas grill inside during the winter, disconnect the cylinder and leave it outside. Water Safety
For above-ground pools, steps and ladders to the pool should be secured or removed when the pool is not in use.
Never leave children unattended in a swimming pool. Floatation devices may never be used as a substitute for direct supervision.
All pool filters and pumps should be turned off when the pool is in use.
Pool filters pumps must be connected to a ground fault interrupter outlet, and properly grounded for safety. If you are not sure, have a certified electrician inspect it.
Keep rescue equipment and a phone next to the pool.
In many states, including New York, any new swimming pool installed over 24" deep must have a pool alarm installed.
Install physical barriers around the pool to limit access. - Fences and walls should be at least 4-feet high and installed completely around the pool. - Gates should be self-closing and self-latching. The latch should be out of reach of small children.
